Monster Builder

Build a 5e creature the way you would sketch one on a napkin, and get a statblock you can run tonight. Type the numbers, write the attacks in ordinary words, and the dice, the to-hit and the save DCs are worked out for you while you watch.

Free, and nothing to sign up for. What you make stays in this browser until you want it in an account.

A statblock is a piece of paper until it takes a turn.

The tracker runs what you built here: it rolls the attacks you wrote, keeps the recharges, and remembers whose turn it is.

Run it in the app
The method

How the builder works

In the order a creature actually comes together. Fill in as much or as little as you like. A name is enough to save, and the rest can wait until the session it is needed for.

Its body

What it is and what it can take

Size, type, armor class, hit points, speed, all on the first tab. The armor class and the hit points are the two the tracker leans on once the fight starts. The others are there for you.

Its teeth

Attacks written the way books print them

Paste a line straight out of a statblock, or start from one of the ready-made shapes if you would rather not type at all. The words you wrote stay on the sheet either way, so the block reads like a block rather than like a form somebody filled in.

The plate

The finished sheet, beside you the whole time

Every keystroke redraws the statblock on the right. It is the same sheet the tracker shows mid-combat.

Inside the builder

Everything a statblock can hold

This is the builder the app itself uses, whole.

Abilities

Scores, saves and skills

Set the six scores and tick the saves and skills it is trained in. Proficiency follows the Challenge Rating on its own, and any number you would rather set by hand can be overridden.

Defenses

Resistances, senses, languages

Damage it shrugs off, damage that stings twice, conditions it cannot suffer, what it can see in the dark and what it can talk to. All of it lands on the sheet where a DM expects to read it.

Spells

Casters, by how often they cast

Group the spells as the block lists them, whether that is at will, three a day or once a day, and name them as you type. The names come from the SRD 5.2 spell list this page credits below, so they are the real ones.

Boss economy

Legendary actions and lair turns

Give it legendary actions and set how many it spends a round. Under the 2014 rules it can take a lair action on initiative 20 as well.

Questions

About building monsters

How do I make a monster in D&D 5e?
Faster than the books do it. A name is all it takes to save one, and the builder hands you the sheet from there. The bar for being worth a turn is higher, though not by much. Give it an armor class, hit points to lose and one attack, and it can carry a round on its own. Write that attack the way the books print it (“Melee Attack Roll: +7, reach 5 ft. Hit: 13 (2d8 + 4) Slashing damage”) and the builder works the dice and the to-hit out of the sentence for you.
Is the monster builder free?
Yes, and there is no ceiling on it. Build one creature or forty; the browser keeps them all the same way. Making an account is only worth it when you want them following you to another device.
Does it use the 2024 rules or the 2014 rules?
Either. You say which on the creature itself. It decides which list a spellcasting block belongs in and whether lair actions get a turn of their own. Pick the book your table plays and the creature comes out written for it.
What happens to a monster I make here?
It stays in this browser; nothing is uploaded. Open the tracker on this device and it is already in your library, ready to drop into a fight. Download it as a file too if you want a copy that outlives the browser, or if you want to hand it to somebody else.
Can I bring the file back in later?
That is what the download is for. The file holds the parts you wrote (the numbers and the prose), and the app works the rolls out again when it reads them, so a creature you saved a year ago arrives as up to date as one you made this morning. Drop it into the monster importer and it is back.
Does it work out a Challenge Rating for me?
It tells you what your creature plays like as you build it. The coach beside the title reads its defenses and its offense separately, prices each against the printed ladder, and shows you the working, so you can take its number, argue with it, or ignore it and set your own.
